The Empire of Texas

Installation view, The Empire of Texas, EPMA.

The Empire of Texas March 2 – June 24, 2018 Peter and Margaret de Wetter Gallery, El Paso Museum of Art See Texas through the lens of El Paso native photographer Richard Baron. This is the first museum showing of thirty-nine select works from his most recent series. In 2015-18 Baron traveled Texas in search of material ranging from historic monuments and new superhighways to abandoned storefronts. Capturing his subjects in black and white in a standard landscape format, Baron combines a modernist sense of design with a love for both iconic and unexpected Texas cultural markers—from the Cadillac Ranch outside Amarillo to a Texas-shaped waffle served in a motel restaurant in Corpus Christi. Support for this exhibition is provided by Texas Commission on the Arts.
