Hijos de Alcalde Dowell

John and Nehemiah Dowell-Hijos de Alcalde Dowell DOWELL, BENJAMIN SHACKLETT (1818- 1880). Benjamin Shacklett (Tío Ben) Dowell, pionero colono y primer alcalde de la ciudad de El Paso, hijo de James y Barbara Shacklett) Dowell, nació en el condado de Meade, Kentucky, el 30 de noviembre, 1818. Él sirvió con Empresa G, Primer Regimiento Caballería, Kentucky, en la Guerra Mexicana (1846- 47), durante la cual fue tomado prisionero en la Encarnación. En 1850 se mudó de Kentucky a Texas y fue empleado por Juan María Ponce De León, cuyo rancho ocupado el sitio del actual centro de El Paso. Después de una breve estancia en la Ciudad de Los Angeles (1854), regresó a El Paso, donde sus intereses de negocios llegó a incluir una berlina, almacén general, oficina de correos, posta, salón billar, y en el hotel en la zona centro de la ciudad, además de un rancho en el Río Grande por encima de la ciudad.
