El edificio Cortez

El edificio Cortez se encuentra en la esquina nordeste de North Mesa y Mills Avenida de San Jacinto Plaza en el centro de El Paso. Durante más de setenta y cinco años ha servido a la ciudad como un hotel, edificio de oficinas y el hogar de los organismos gubernamentales. Fue construido originalmente como un hotel de la plaza, el último de los tres hoteles en ocupar ese sitio. En 1899, la señora Alzina DeGroff, una pionera en el negocio hotelero en El Paso, adquirió el Vendome Hotel y le cambió el nombre al Hotel Orndorff en honor a su primer marido. Ella lo opero durante más de veinticinco años, hasta 1924, cuando pidió prestado 825.000 dólares y contrató a la reconocida firma de arquitectos de El Paso Trost y Trost para diseñar un nuevo hotel. El Hotel Orndorff fue demolido y un nuevo Orndorff Hotel se construyó en el mismo sitio a un costo de más de 1,4 millones de dólares. Henry C. Trost, quien dominaba la escena arquitectónica del suroeste de Estados Unidos por más de tres décadas, diseñó el edificio.
