She has spent her entire professional career in El Paso in the fields of writing, journalism, public relations and as a local historian. She worked for the El Paso Times, El Paso Independent School District, El Paso Herald-Post and for UTEP. There, she worked in media relations and then became Associate Director of Texas Western Press at UTEP, serving until her retirement in 1990. She became Assistant Editor of the Roundup, the magazine of the Western Writers of America and served two years as president of that organization. She also was Assistant Editor of UTEP's Nova. Hamilton also edited publications (like the El Paso County Historical Society's Password), authored and published books. She is a Past Sheriff of the local Mt. She was selected as the Outstanding Ex-Student of Austin High School in 1990. She also served on various committees and groups. In 2013, Hamilton was inducted in El Paso County Historical Society's Hall of Honor. Her professional contributions to the community have been enhanced through her collecting of Mexican folk art paintings known as retables, which have been exhibited in El Paso, New Mexico and around the nation. Nancy Hamilton received Eugene O. Porter Award, El Paso County Historical Society, Password, Vol 49, No. 4, Winter, 2004 p. 170-72.

"We all need to be aware of UTEP's increasing role of importance in this region," wrote Hamilton. She was honored with Gold Nugget Award from College of Liberal Arts at University of Texas at El Paso. A member of the American Mensa, Ltd. she was selected as Outstanding Ex-Student of Austin High in 1990. One of her books, UTEP:A Pictorial History is an invaluable resource.

March is Women's History Month. She did so much to preserve and communicate the history of our borderlands.
