Charles Nerinckx fue un sacerdote misionero católico que emigró de Bélgica para trabajar en Kentucky. Fundó la orden religiosa Hermanas de Loretto. Debido a su propia experiencia como refugiado obligado a esconderse en Bélgica, el Padre Nerinckx llegó a Kentucky decidido a ayudar a los pobres, los esclavos y los huérfanos. Como piloto de circuito, se encontró con otros clérigos con ideas abolicionistas que compartían su deseo de enseñar y empoderar a las personas de color. En 1824, Nerinckx anunció la formación de una alianza femenina negra en Loretto poco antes de su muerte. (2 de octubre de 1761 – 12 de agosto de 1824)
