Manny Ortega - 1940 - 1949 - El Paso, Texas
Manny Ortega never got a title shot. What he did do to prove that he was really the best in the world and king of the sport was the following: KO'd World Champion Jackie Callura in three rounds; KO'd World Champion Jackie Wilson in the tenth round; TKO'd the greatest featherweight champion in history, Manny Ortiz, in the eighth round. He was trained by the famous El Paso legend Alkie Nicholson. Unfortunately for Manny Ortega boxing was controlled by Frankie Carbo and Mafia connections.

My uncle was born in 1930 in El paso. He proudly tells that Manny married his friend Willy's sister and met my uncle after recent beating he took from neighborhood gang members. 3-4 would jump him at once. Manny taught him to box and ended the beatings. My uncle says Manny was from Dalhart, TX and learned to fight from a former boxer while they worked together at a gas station
