El 19 de marzo de 1966, los Texas Western Miners con el entrenador Don Haskins anotaron una victoria de 72-65 sobre Kentucky para capturar lo que sigue siendo hasta el día de hoy, el único campeonato nacional ganado por un equipo de baloncesto masculino de la División I en el estado de Texas. En ese día, el futuro miembro del Salón de la Fama Haskins se convirtió en el primer entrenador en iniciar el juego por el título con cinco jugadores afroamericanos, en marcado contraste con la alineación toda blanca de Kentucky.
