En 1956, McKay regresó a El Paso después de ser honrosamente dado de alta del Cuerpo de Marines. Después de una temporada con Borden Milk Company, Tom se casó y se mudó a Odessa, Texas, donde trabajó en la planta de Butadiene durante dos años. Luego se trasladó de nuevo a El Paso para trabajar para Aetna Life Insurance Company antes de unirse al Departamento de Policía de El Paso en 1960.
