En esta fotografía está Thomas McKay en su 21ro cumpleaños. Tom se graduó de Mar Vista en 1952 y regresó a El Paso donde trabajó como hombre de armazón para Mountain Bell Telephone Company antes de unirse al Cuerpo de Marines de los Estados Unidos, que lo envió de regreso a San Diego para entrenamiento. Tom se mudó del campamento de arranque, a un curso de teléfono y electrónica en San Diego, luego para combatir el entrenamiento en Oceanside, California como un preludio para el deber en Corea. En cambio, las órdenes vinieron de Gifu, Japón. Tom fue asignado a un cuartel que alguna vez fue el hogar de los pilotos Kamikaze de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
