Richard Matty nació en Ohio, fue ordenado sacerdote el 28 de mayo de 1983 para la Sociedad de María. Llegó a El Paso en 1986 y fue el director ejecutivo fundador de los servicios Diocesano de Migrantes y Refugiados. Fue nombrado el primer sacerdote de Santa Frances Xavier Cabrini. El P. Matty también fue nombrado administrador de la Diócesis de El Paso de 1995 a 1996, seguido de su nombramiento como rector de la Catedral de San Patricio el 1 de julio de 1997. Ocupó este cargo hasta el 16 de julio de 2012, a la edad de 57 años. murió mientras viajaba a Chicago.
