Barbara Jean Lee - Congresswoman
Photograph: Barbara Lee speaking at the McCall Center in El Paso, Texas. Barbara Jean Lee was born on July 16, 1946, in El Paso, Texas. She had lived here until 1960 when she moved to Los Angeles, California. In California she attended Fernando High School, graduated from Mills College, and received her Masters in Social Work at the University of California, Berkley in 1975. During her time in school she did many notable things such as being the president of the Mills College Black Student Union, and serving as Shirley Chisholm's delegate during her presidential campaign in 1972. In 1998 Congresswoman Barbara Lee was elected to serve California's 9th congressional district (now the 13th). Lee received national attention when she was the only member of congress to vote against the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Terrorists (AUMF) following the September 11th terrorist attacks.
