Bassett trajo las primeras maderas de dimensión en vagón. Los habitantes de EL Paso que vinieron de los Estados Unidos construyeron casas de madera y ladrillo con las que estaban familiarizadas. Estos nuevos materiales de construcción se quemaban fácilmente y provoco la creación de un departamento de bomberos.
