Tanto los pueblos españoles como los nativos americanos de Mesoamérica y el suroeste construían con adobe, hechos de materiales disponibles. Las gruesas paredes sirvieron como aislamiento. Oscar T. Bassett trajo las primeras maderas de dimensión en vagón. Los habitantes de EL Paso que vinieron de los Estados Unidos construyeron casas de madera y ladrillo con las que estaban familiarizadas. Estos nuevos materiales de construcción se quemaban fácilmente y provoco la creación de un departamento de bomberos.
