Originalmente, el edificio albergaba la Escuela de Entrenamiento Congregacional de Río Grande, una escuela vocacional para jóvenes mexicanos dirigida por el Rev. A.C. Wright, un ministro congregacionalista. En 1902 el edificio fue comprado por los Drs. M.P. Schuster M.O. Wright, Alward White, A.L. Justice, H.M. Shught, E.H. Irving, O.C. Irving, Scott Dixon, G. Wehrle, H.T. Thompson y J. Shelton Horsley con el propósito de abrir un nuevo hospital con una escuela de enfermería también. Providence abrió en octubre de ese año. Décadas más tarde, después de que el nuevo Hospital Providence abriera en 1952, el viejo edificio del Hospital Providence fue derribado para hacer sitio a la Interestatal 10. El Border Heritage Center está en la Biblioteca Principal del centro de la ciudad, en El Paso, TX.
