Teniente General Anson Mills

Anson Mills, topógrafo, constructor, oficial del ejército, ingeniero, comisionado de la frontera americana, diplomático, e inventor, nació en Thorntown, Indiana, el 31 de agosto de 1834, el hijo de James P. y Sarah (Kenworthy) Mills. Asistió a la escuela en Indiana y Nueva York y aceptó un nombramiento en la Academia Militar de Estados Unidos en 1855. Después de reprobar en West Point en 1857, recorrió el camino postal de Butterfield Overland a El Paso, arribando el 8 de mayo de 1858. fue nombrado topógrafo de distrito, realizando trabajos en Fuertes Quitman, Davis, Stockton, y Bliss, todos en el oeste de Texas. También construyó el Edificio Overland, el cual fue la estructura mas grande de El Paso, durante tres décadas. El 28 de febrero de 1859, Mills presentó un plano de un asentamiento llamado Rancho Ponce, Franklin y Smithsville. Llamó a la pequeña comunidad: El Paso, y el nombre se quedó. El centro de la ciudad sigue siendo prácticamente como él la planeó. Sin embargo, Mills es más reconocido, por la disputa de límites con México sobre el Chamizal y por el Edificio Mills en El Paso. Siendo Comisionado de la frontera estadounidense se negó a aceptar el acuerdo de arbitraje de 1911 que cedió el are de el Chamizal a México. El Edificio Mills comenzó como el Hotel Grand Central, que Mills construyó en 1883. Cuando el hotel se quemó, lo reemplazó con el Edificio Mills en 1911, en ese momento el mayor monolito de concreto en el mundo.
