Fort Bliss, en 1846, el coronel Alexander Doniphan dirigió el 1er Regimiento de Voluntarios montados en Missouri a través de El Paso del Norte, con victorias en la Batalla de El Brazito y la Batalla del Sacramento. Luego, el 7 de noviembre de 1848, la Orden General nº 58 del Departamento de Guerra ordenó el establecimiento de un puesto frente a El Paso del Norte, ahora Ciudad Juárez. El 8 de septiembre de 1849, el grupo de guarnición de varias compañías de la 3.ª Infantería de los Estados Unidos ('The Old Guard', actualmente el regimiento en servicio activo más antiguo del Ejército de los Estados Unidos), comandado por el mayor Jefferson Van Horne, encontró sólo cuatro asentamientos pequeños y dispersos en el lado norte del Río Grande. El Puesto frente a El Paso del Norte se estableció por primera vez en el sitio de Coon's Ranch, protegió el territorio recientemente ganado de los Apaches y Comanches, proporcionó ley y orden, y escoltó a los forty-niners.
