Born in Morenci, AZ (1932) to Jose Andres Sanchez (a miner for Phelps Dodge) and Maria de Refugio Chavira, both of Hidalgo del Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico. Her family moved to El Paso in the mid-1930s and she would meet Arturo Medrano at El Paso high school.
