Chief of El Paso Police Department James White

| James H. White | ⁣ Born on February 15, 1847, in Portsmouth, Virginia. White’s father was a well-known merchant in that area. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at the age of fifteen and attended Virginia Collegiate Institute. He married Barbara Dupper in the present day of Las Cruces, New Mexico. White also worked for Mexican President Porfirio Diaz as chief of artillery. ⁣ ⁣ White returned to El Paso in 1880. Positions held were El Paso Sheriff, Chief El Paso Police Dept. & Tax Collector. White ran for El Paso Mayor as a Republican and lost to fellow mason, Charles R. Morehead (Democrat). ⁣ ⁣ In masonry, he belonged to El Paso Lodge # 130 A.F. & A.M. and El Paso York Rite. He is buried in Concordia Masonic cemetery owned by #130. Image Description: Black and white image shows a portrait of James White from his torso up.
