Dia de Los Muertos 2019
EPMA has been celebrating Dia de los Muertos for two consecutive years now. All families are invited to enjoy live music performance, free hands-on art workshops, food from local businesses among other fun activities. The highlight of 2019 Dia de los Muertos was the Alebrijes Parade, where the museum debuted four custom alebrijes sponsored by the El Paso Museum of Art Foundation. The alebrijes were created by an artist collective from Mexico City, Mexico, Collectivo Ultima Hora whose art was featured in the James Bond movie, Specter. Alebrijes are folk art sculptures of mythical or fantastical animals. Image Description: A fantastical, Mexican folk art alebrije, that looks like a winged dragon, is in the center of this color photograph. The alebrije is standing on a rolling platform parade float that is being pushed by three individuals wearing traditional calavera make-up and wearing zoot suits. The alebrije has a bright pink belly and teal feathers. The head of the alebrije has its jaws wide open, showing sharp teeth and a red flickering tongue. The photograph is set on the street during a parade. To the left of the alebrije there are a group of 20 plus spectators. Directly behind the alebrije parade float, there is a drum corps line. The background of the photograph showcases downtown buildings.
