Popular Dry Goods Building

The Popular Dry Goods Building was part of the Popular Dry Goods Co. store chain, founded by Adolph Schwartz. It was family owned and run from 1902 to 1995. This store, since 1917 located at 301 San Antonio, on the corner of Mesa and San Antonio, was opened in 1903. It was expanded and remodeled several times. Behind the store you can see the Victor and the First National Bank. The Popular was involved in the Mexican Revolution, not only because both sides bought merchandise for their troops there, but also because the basement served as a hiding place for General Juan Navarro after his surrender at the Battle of Juárez in 1911.
